With this HDMI matrix switch 2×4, you can supply up to 4 HDMI sinks such as televisions, projectors and AV receivers. The sound system can also be connected analog via SPDIF / Toslink or audio. Two inputs are available for HDMI sources. You can freely assign all connections, eg output from HDMI source 1 via outputs 1 to 3 and simultaneous output from HDMI source 2 to output 4. The Matrix thus replaces a 4-way splitter, an audio extractor and a 2-way at the same time switches.
format support
The HDMI switch is fully compatible with all video resolutions up to Ultra HD (maximum 4096×2160 at 60 Hz). HDR formats such as HDR10 and Dolby Vision are also transmitted - provided the connected HDMI sinks also support this. In audio, format support depends on the connector. Physics limits the maximum formats:
At the two exits 3.5mm jack the audio extractor supplies the sound for headphones or a hi-fi system if the source is currently playing stereo sound. To do this, you can switch the audio EDID to 2.0. With higher formats or ARC, the outputs remain mute.
The switch delivers the audio across the two SPDIF Toslink outputs if the source is Stereo, Dolby Digital or DTS. So a maximum of 5.1 sound as bitstream. If this is the audio format you want, set it to 5.1 on the switch. Playback also works for TV sound with active ARC.
Over HDMI all formats can be transmitted, including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD. The source and the HDMI sinks must of course support the format - and signal this via EDID.
Please note that many players adhere to the HDMI specification and only output formats supported by the HDMI sinks. For example, Apple TV only outputs 4K Dolby Vision with Dolby Atmos sound if all connected HDMI sinks support it. So if you connect a projector, HD sound is no longer possible.
For some other HDMI sources, you can set the video and audio format manually. This depends on the device and the app / software running on it.
The HDMI Matrix Switch / Splitter distributes the signal from 2 sources to 4 HDMI sinks plus sound systems
EDID Management (Audio)
The EDID management of the VMS02400 can overwrite the information of the HDMI sinks in the audio area. The sound output can therefore be limited to stereo or increased to 5.1 sound formats (Dolby Digital, DTS). The 3 modes 2.0, 5.1 and PASS are used for this. Higher sound formats are only possible if all recognized HDMI sinks support it. To do this, the PASS mode is selected. As a result, the matrix switch no longer intervenes in the negotiation.
ARC function
If 2 televisions are connected to HDMI output 1 and 2, their internal sound (receiver tuner or app) can be output to the two SPDIF outputs - even at the same time if you have 2 sound systems in separate rooms. The ARC function (Audio Return Channel) is used for this. In ARC mode, the two analog audio outputs remain silent.
